When you pay for petrol using your YouTrip card at a petrol pump in Malaysia, and if there are insufficient funds for the temporary hold of a specific amount of RM200 (or another amount set by the petrol station) from the available limit on your account as well as the final charged amount, YouTrip perform a SmartExchange™ — converting funds from another wallet (such as SGD or others) to complete the transaction. This process can sometimes result in what looks like a mismatch between the exchange amount and the actual petrol purchase.
Let’s look at two common scenarios:
Scenario 1: SmartExchange™ used funds from your SGD wallet
This is the more straightforward case. If your MYR wallet didn’t have enough funds, and YouTrip converted your SGD balance to cover the petrol transaction:
- You may notice a SmartExchange™ amount that looks higher than your petrol charge. This is due to how petrol stations hold and later charge funds.
-
In some cases, a temporary negative balance might briefly appear in your MYR wallet before being balanced out after all transactions settle.
What do I need to do?
Nothing! Your balance will correct itself automatically once all related transactions (pre-authorisation, final charge, and any reversals) are processed.
Scenario 2: SmartExchange™ used funds from your non-SGD wallets
In this case, as there was not enough to pull from your SGD wallet, the amount was pulled from a non-SGD wallet instead. Here’s what can happen:
- You might not see anything unusual immediately, but on your next transaction, the MYR wallet may show a negative balance.
-
This can cause the next SmartExchange™ to include both the new purchase and the earlier shortfall, appearing like more was exchanged than spent.
What do I need to do?
To restore your wallet to a healthy state:
- Top up your SGD wallet, and
- Use the in-app currency exchange to convert SGD into the wallet showing a negative balance.
Future Travel Tip: To avoid automatic currency exchanges and ensure your other wallet balances aren’t used, please make sure your MYR wallet has at least MYR 200 plus the value of the petrol you've pumped.
